Australian Parakeet Many species of Australian Parakeets have proved to be very dedicated pet birds. When hand reared the best pet species tend to be Cockatiels, Barrabands, Princess of Wales etc. Â Diet The diet for Australian Parakeets should consist of a seed mixture which varies according to the size of the birds. A basic mixture should contain mixed millets, plain canary, sunflower, safflower, buckwheat and smaller amounts of hemp, groats, oats, wheat etc. The seed mixture should be placed in large dishes in the shelter. An additional dish of sunflower can also be offered. There are many types of parakeet mixtures on the market today, remember the better quality the seed the more nutritional value will be passed to the bird. You may need to add various additional ingredients to the mixture, depending on the requirements of your birds. Do not be afraid to try various other types of seeds to establish what your birds like best, a varied diet can only help your bird to thrive. Remember a healthy bird is a happy bird and the results from good feeding should begin to show in the following breeding season. Grit, cuttlefish and iodine blocks should be available at all times. Drinking water should be changed every day. Â Softfood can be offered daily when chicks are in the next. Some parakeets do not take readily to softfood, but if you persist eventually they will start to eat most types of soft food offered. EMP forms a nice ready-mixed convenient soft food, to this add a few groats and some grated carrots. Vegetables such as carrots, sweet corn, cabbage, Brussels etc should be offered daily. As an alternative fruits such as apples, oranges, grapes, plums, pears etc. can be substituted. |
